In-Office General Anesthesia

Sedation is most commonly used during extensive procedures, for patients with dental phobia, or for patients who find it difficult to sit still. Sedation is endorsed by the American Dental Association and is an effective way to make many patients comfortable during their dental visit. This can be a great option for some children. Undergoing dental treatment under sedation has many benefits, some of which include:

  • No memory of treatment provided
  • No fear or discomfort during treatment
  • Lack of sense of time, smell, and sounds

What types of Sedation do you offer?

We offer two different types of sedation in our office.

Nitrous Oxide, commonly referred to as “laughing gas” is the most frequently used option for helping ease children’s fears when undergoing treatment. The gas is administered with a mixture of oxygen and has a calming effect that helps phobic or anxious patients relax during their dental treatment. After treatment, the nitrous is turned off, and 100% oxygen is administered for 5-10 minutes to help flush any remaining gas. The effects wear off almost immediately.

In-Office General Anesthesia is another type of sedation we are able to offer. This type of sedation is administered and monitored by Dr. Heather Robinson with Midwest Dental Anesthesia Services right in our office. During this type of sedation patients go between states of consciousness and unconsciousness. Children who have this type of sedation often do not remember procedures.

Before using a sedative, it is important to tell your dentist about any medications or medical treatments your child is receiving. Before administering any sedative or anesthetic, your child’s dentist will talk to you about the process of sedation and pre-and post-sedation instructions. We would be happy to discuss these options and determine which may be best for your child.
