SDF (Silver Diamine Fluoride)

Approved by the FDA, Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) is used to quickly treat dental cavities. SDF is composed of two active ingredients – silver and fluoride – which help prevent further tooth decay while reducing the tooth’s sensitivity. The silver ingredient kills bacteria and biofilm that causes the decay, and the fluoride inhibits the softening of the tooth structure.

Would Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) be a good option for my child?

This can be a great noninvasive and easy option for some children. Some reasons SDF may be a good option are the following:

  • Young children that are unable to tolerate dental treatment and need to wait until they are older
  • Patients with special needs
  • Children who have Early Childhood Caries.

Once my child has Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) will any further treatment be needed?

SDF is not a sole treatment option; the patient will still need a filling or crown to complete the restoration of the tooth. However, patients benefit from SDF because the bacteria is killed, the tooth is less sensitive, and the healthy tooth structure isn’t damaged.

What does the procedure look like?

The Child’s teeth are brushed (without toothpaste) and rinsed.
The teeth with caries (cavities) are kept dry and excess decay may be removed.
Dr. Laganis uses a small brush with SDF applied and place the material on the cavity for 2 minutes.
The tooth decay will turn black while the rest of the healthy tooth structure will stay white.
Any excess SDF will be removed and the child is asked to refrain from eating or drinking for 1 hour.
